Spa Etiquette

Spa visits are designed to be a relaxing and rejuvenating experience, however, if you're unfamiliar with spa etiquette, it could become somewhat uncomfortable. You can find some great spa tips below that will help you enjoy and make the most out of your next spa visit.

Medical Conditions

Make sure you mention any relevant medical conditions you may have when booking your appointment. Some treatments may not be suitable for you. Also, it's a good idea to make the spa aware if you wear contact lenses as well if you're getting a facial.

Plan your Day Accordingly

On the day of your spa visit, do not plan any activities that involve long sun exposure or alcohol. It is also a good idea not to plan any physically demanding activities after your spa appointment. If you have any questions just call the spa and ask them.

Nudity

Some people are not comfortable being nude around other people, this is ok, but don't let that stop you from enjoying the benefits of a spa. If modesty is an issue, call the spa and speak with them. Often times they have several options to choose from so you can get the spa treatments you desire and remain comfortable and not necessarily have to take all your clothes off.

Punctuality

It is recommended you arrive 15-30 minutes early so you have time to transition into the spa. Your treatment time could be shortened if you arrive late.

Exploring the Spa

It is a good idea to check out the activity schedule to see any services or facilities that may interest you as well as touring the spa. The tour will help you become more familiar with your surroundings and introduce you to the spa facilities such as saunas and relaxation rooms which are often complimentary with many treatments.

Therapists

If you prefer a male or female therapist, be sure to ask when making your appointment. Also, if you enjoyed the services of a particular therapist on a prior visit then feel free to request that person for your next appointment.

Cancelling your Spa Appointment

It is just good etiquette overall to give as much notice as possible when cancelling an appointment. Also, be conscious of cancellation policies.

Express your Preferences

Most all aspects of your spa treatment can be modified or adjusted to meet your needs, taste and desires. This includes things like amount of light, music, room temperature and even conversation. If your receiving a massage it's recommended to let the therapist know if you would like them to be gentler or massage deeper.

Shaving

If you decide to shave prior to your spa appointment, do so at least two hours before your appointment.

Eating and Drinking

It is best to not eat for at least an hour before your spa appointment and avoid drinking alcohol on the day of treatment as well. Be sure to drink plenty of water before and after your spa appointment, especially if you plan on relishing in a sauna, steam room or heat therapy.

Shared Facilities

You should take a shower before entering the soaking or swimming pool and whirlpool. Also, when you're in the sauna or steam room, sit on your towel and wear the plastic shoes provided by the spa. Women should not shave in the steam room.

Pets

Some animals are allowed and welcome at some resorts but should not be brought to the spa.

Cell Phones

You should turn off your cell phone or leave them in your car or room. You are there to relax and others are there to relax as well.

Gratuities

Find out if gratuities are included. Normally, they are not and 15% is customary but feel free to leave more or less depending on the level of service provided and your overall experience. Leave your tip at the reception desk when you are paying your tab rather than giving it to the therapist. If you had multiple services from multiple people then be sure to separate your tips out accordingly.
