How to Prevent Water Damage In Your Home
The first thing you need to do is inspect your house from top to bottom for mold. Mold is a sure sign of water damage and you need to check the area with the mold for anything like water leaks or things of that nature. You should especially keep an eye out in places like the bathroom, your kitchen, or anywhere that has pipes connected to it. It is also important to check around your water heater. Be sure to check around your dishwasher, as well, as they are one of the most common sources for water damage.
You need to also inspect your air conditioning system, as condensation can build up and cause damage and it will not work properly during the summer months, which can be a very unpleasant experience. You should also make sure all faucets are off for awhile to search for any condensation that could build up anywhere in your home you may have missed.
Another thing you should do is unplug your water hoses from their spigots before the start of the winter months. Something pretty easy to do is make sure the hose is completely drained of water. This will help prevent some freezing, and will also help save you from buying new water hoses. While you are outside, you should inspect gutters and drains for leave buildup. This will just cause more water buildup and could lead to your gutters being worn out before they would normally. You should also inspect your roof, as snow and freezing can cause serious damage in the winter months. You should be on the look out for curling or cracked shingles on your roof, as any of these could be a sign of water damage. Keep in mind that you should not stay on the roof for very long, as this will cause damage to your roof as well.
