So you are finally on your own. The kids have all graduated and moved on to college. Now you find that you have just too much space in your house to accommodate yourself and your significant other. Well, before you go putting your home on the market, you need to go through your home and make sure it is in perfect condition for selling. The most difficult to find watch out for is preexisting water damage. Here are some steps you can take to make sure you find it all so that you can make a profit with your home.

The first thing you need to do is go into your kitchen and bathrooms. These are the areas where you will most likely find mold, and therefore where you must be thorough in your search. It is very important that if you check underneath the sinks, as these areas are the places where mold most often grows. This is also a good opportunity for you to inspect the pipes of your bathroom and kitchen for rust, leaks, or any other form of damage. If you encounter any damage done to pipes, it is important that you call a licensed plumber to do the repairs, as it can be illegal in some states to work on pipes without a license. You also may end up doing more harm than help if you try to make such repairs by yourself, so any major work that needs to be done before selling your home is probably best left to professionals.

The next area you should inspect for mold is your basement, if you have one. This is where most homes contain their hot water heaters, and this can be a source of humidity, in what is almost always a humid environment. Depending on how extensive the mold growth is, you may be able to get rid of it with the aid of store bought chemical cleaning agents. The next areas you should focus on are the bedrooms, closets, attic, and laundry room. Look for any sign of discoloration on the walls, ceilings, floors, carpets, and doors. Look throughout and thoroughly so you do not miss anything.

When you do find any sever water damage or mold issues, it is often for the best to call in a water damage company because they will know how to fix whatever caused or is causing the water damage and fix the mold issue too. It is much easier to sell a home that shows no signs of mold or water damage. These are two things a new homeowner does not want in the bargain.
