Water Damage - Cleaning Up The Water When An Upstairs Bathroom Floods

When you come home from a very long day at work, sometimes you cannot think of any better way to unwind that to soak in a bathtub full of hot water for an obscenely long amount of time. So, you walk upstairs and turn on the water and let it begin filling the tub. Just as the tub is already halfway to the point you desire it to be, you hear one of your children calling urgently. You rush to see what the problem is as any parent should. Before you know it, fifteen long minutes have passed by. You see that just outside the bathroom door there is a dark spot that is continuing to grow. Things do not look any better when you open the door and discover that your tub is not just overflowing, but your floor is covered in water. So, how do you deal with all of this water on your floor? Well, here are some simple steps that will help you clean up the mess and make sure that you will not have to deal with water damage, such as mold.

You might use towels to get up this ocean of water, but if you have a wet dry vacuum, that would work too. Be sure to get it all up, because if you do not do a thorough job, then there will be some water left to linger and attract mold. After you have soaked up all of the water, you need to mop your floor, as bacteria may have been attracted to the floor. Bacteria are the starting point for mold growth.

Mold likes to grow in hot and wet environments and can be a real pain to have to clean up. So mopping up the floor will help you in this endeavor. The next thing you need to do, after drying off your floor, is to soak up the water on your carpet and shampoo it out. This will ensure that no mold builds up in the carpet, which is also a material that mold grows easily on. The mold could cause structural damage in the wood underneath the carpet and the last thing anybody wants to do, especially if the bathroom is located on a second floor, is step through a hole in the floor.

Anytime you have a flood this large, you should consider a professional water damage company to clean up the mess. They will be able to check and see if there was any damage done to the ceilings downstairs when a flood happened upstairs. They can make sure that there is no moisture left anywhere that could cause a mold outbreak.
