Making The Choice Between An Indoor Or Outdoor Antenna

If you have decided to invest an antenna for your TV needs, then good for you. Although the antenna is considered by most as outdated and old-fashioned, only firsthand experience will tell you it is anything but an outdated device. Thousands upon thousands of people have already purchased antennas and are satisfied with their buy. Now the question remains: do you need to buy an indoor antenna or an outdoor antenna?

Which one you choose will rely heavily on where you are located. Each antenna is capable of picking up signals from as little as 25 miles away to as much as 100 or more miles away. Usually, antennas with a smaller range tend to be used for the indoors, while an antenna with a greater range is beneficial for those who live in a more rural area.

So take a look at where you are living now. Do you live in a major city? Do you live on the outskirts of or within 20 to 30 miles from a major metropolitan city? If the answer is yes, then an indoor antenna will probably be the best choice for you. Depending on which indoor antenna you buy, you can mount it right on top of your TV or even place it on the side of your entertainment stand where it is not visible. There are also antennas that can be used for both indoor and outdoor use. These antennas range in size and usually have a pick up range of about 40 to 60 miles.

Although some manufacturers would advise against mounting an antenna in your attic, a lot of consumers have tried and succeeded in getting great reception and clear channels. Before bringing all of your equipment and goods up there, though, make sure there is enough space to work in and have your antenna set up because a lot of attics don't have that much room.

If you live more than 60 miles from the nearest city, which will have the major broadcast towers, then you will need to invest in an outdoor antenna, which will need to be mounted on your roof. You also have the option of placing it atop a pole, but most find that the rooftop is easier and better. These antennas should come with instructions on installing your hardware on the roof, so a little patience and a little time is all you will need to get your antenna up and running.

Whatever you decide, there is one thing you need to do for sure: enjoy your new antenna!
