The Four Most Likely Causes Of Fire In The Home
Fires can be started by grease spills or splatters in the kitchen when you are cooking. Sparks can pop out of your fireplace onto the floor or the chimney itself can burst into flames on the inside. Candles can be turned over and space heaters can be set too near flammable objects. Electrical fires can start because of faulty outlets, light switches, or electronic items.
If you have a cord that is damaged, a fire can start from there. It can burn up the plug in and it can shoot sparks out of it and it can get on the floor. You have to check all cords before you try to plug them in. Electrical cords can become frayed or cracked with age. They can get cuts or cracks from something being set on them or being bent in a particular position for a while. Pets have been known to chew on them.
Fires can come from cooking on your stove or with another small cooking appliance. A burner can start a fire on the stove which can quickly spread though out the kitchen especially if there is no one in there overseeing the cooking. Malfunctions to appliances can start a fire in your homes. If you plug in any small kitchen appliance and it shoots sparks, smokes, or shocks you, have it repaired or throw it away.
Candles have often started house fires just because people use them carelessly. When turned over or placed too near flammable objects, they can cause the counters, carpets, curtains, furniture, and many other things to catch on fire. You have to watch candles and you have to put them where no one can knock them over.
Even though there is supposed to be a fire in a wood burning fireplace that is where you want it to stay. If you do not use doors or a screen on your fireplace, the wood can pop and sparks can fly out across the room landing on the floor, rugs, and furniture. Never place rugs and furniture too close to the fireplace even if you use a screen or doors just to be on the safe side. To avoid a chimney fire, you must have it cleaned on the inside every year and never use flammable chemicals to start a fire.
