Working During Pregnancy
Morning sickness doesn't only occur in the morning but may occur at any time, even during the night. When you are working try to avoid anything that you know may cause nausea. Some women find that certain orders trigger that nauseous feeling. If someone is reheating food in the lunchroom microwave and you know that you aren't going to be able to cope with the smell try to stay away from the lunchroom or try to take an earlier or later break.
Make sure that you eat a lot of small snacks such as crackers so keep some at your desk. Some women find hard candies help prevent nausea while others find ginger ale or ginger tea helpful. Keep a water bottle at your desk and sip on it all day. Women who don't drink enough fluids tend to have more 'morning sickness'.
Don't get overtired by not having enough sleep as fatigue can cause nausea. Also make sure you avoid rushing around getting ready for work as that may cause you problems. Try to get up early enough to be able to be relaxed getting to work not rushing to get there in time.
Your energy level may change during the day so try to keep the more demanding work to do during the times you feel more energetic.
Try to take short frequent breaks from your desk by getting up and walking around for a few minutes. You'll find you may get a burst of energy by doing a simple chore such as going to the photocopier to make a copy of a document. When you are able to go to the workplace lounge area sit back with your feet up and your eyes closed for a few minutes. If you have a walkman or mp3 player listen to some peaceful music.
Make sure that your time away from work isn't too stressful by getting help with house cleaning or shopping. Don't try to be a super woman but pace yourself. Don't try to take care of the whole world.
Exercise is very important when you are pregnant and it can even make you feel more energetic. Ask your doctor or health care giver what exercises you can do or if you should become involved with a prenatal fitness class. Even a short walk can be beneficial for a pregnant woman who sits at a desk all day.
If your job involves lifting and bending make sure you bend at your knees and not from your waist. Don't twist your body while lifting and carry or lift items close to your body and lift with your legs not your back. Be sure to ask for help if something is too big or heavy for you to lift comfortably.
Women who stand a lot on their job may have more problems than ones who sit down more. Make sure you are always wearing comfortable shoes and if necessary wear support stockings. Standing for a long time can cause back pain and/or leg problems. If you have to stand for a prolonged period of time stand with one leg raised on a small stool or footrest and switch feet occasionally (using a stool or footrest at home while working at the kitchen counter, washing dishes or ironing can help prevent back pain as well).
If you have a job that involves a lot of sitting make sure you have a chair with a firm seat, lower back support and adjustable arms. In order to avoid possible problems with leg circulation a chair with a slightly curved front to the seat (called a waterfall front) prevents having a lot of pressure on the back of your legs and may be preferred by most women. Some employers provide all employees with ergonomic chairs which although more expensive than a regular office chair help prevent employee back problems. If you don't have an adjustable chair use a small cushion or pillow for your back and if necessary use a small cushion on the seat section. Put your feet up on a footrest or box. If nothing else is available you can use a thick phone book. By having your knees slightly higher than your hips you may prevent back pain.
Working during pregnancy is becoming more common but women should take some precautions to protect their unborn baby and their own health. Try to avoid stressful situations whenever possible and ask for help if you need it. If you do start to have problems working talk to your doctor or health care giver for advice.
