Get Involved to Save Our Environment
Now, let's take a look at how you can keep up your eco-friendly status for the good of our world, but at the same time, save money - very important in today's recession.
Be Energy-Efficient:
It now makes good sense for the environment and your pocketbook to switch to Compact Fluorescent Light Bulbs (CFL). They last 10 times longer than incandescent bulbs and use 75% less energy. There are other small, yet significant ways to save energy. Electronics like faxes and printers now come with an automatic energy saving button. Computers, calculators, radios and tvs, should be turned off and unplugged when not in use.
Get Involved:
Volunteer in your church or other organization to invest in a community garden. Starting a community garden offers an opportunity to plant trees, herbs, or vegetables. Become a member of a non-profit organization which may offer new opportunities and earth-friendly events in which you can get involved . Enjoy the delight of eating what you have grown. It is possible when you plant a home vegetable garden. Make sure you have sufficient space for your garden.
Purchase Cost-Efficient Vehicles:
Still driving that huge gas-guzzling truck instead of a smaller more cost-efficient car? Residents in metropolitan areas should ride the bus, subway or an occasional taxi. Are you still driving a gas guzzler? It's time to trade it in and get a vehicle with offers better gas mileage and reduced emissions . Another option that's available is carpooling. Friends, family, even co-workers are a great outlet for catching a ride once in awhile. With gas prices escalating, more and more money-conscious men and women are purchasing Hybrid vehicles which cut gas usage by incorporating super size batteries which take over at certain speeds and reduce gas usage. The higher initial cost will be offset over time.
Recycle:
Start maximizing recycling in various areas of your life. These days most offices provide recycling bins to dispose of paper, plastics, and cans, among other items. If your place of work doesn't offer this kind of service, then talk to the guy in charge. It wouldn't hurt to ask him or her about implementing an area for any recyclables. Also, if you always find yourself buying cases of bottled water, then start to salvage one every once in a while. Drink it, wash it and reuse the plastic bottle two to three more times. Other containers can also be utilized. Also, instead of drinking coffee out of a new Styrofoam cup every morning, skip it, and invest in a personal coffee mug or container that can go along with you. If you haven't tried it yet, create an area at home for your recyclable items. Every 2-3 weeks take your bin to the nearest drop-off; these days there are more and more recycling centers around town.
Cost Effective Alternatives:
Just what are eco-friendly alternatives? Many Americans still do not recognize the importance of these alternatives. So, when you're out shopping, start looking at new cost-effective alternatives such as recycled paper products. Items such as toilet paper and paper towels can be somewhat cheaper depending on where you shop. Also, many grocery stores now sell various fabric-based totes to carry your purchased items instead of using paper or plastic, but if you do decide to use plastic bags from the store, those could always be reused as garbage bags for your smaller containers at home. Want to save some dollars. Check for alternative green producs online. You'll find bargains in products for the home, office and clothing. Also, there are plenty of recycled/or biodegradable products out there to choose from, so look for the cheaper store brand eco-labels.
