Home flooring upgrade: Refinish or replace?
Back in the day, red oak was the typical selection for interior flooring. Today's consumer has an abundance of options for flooring color and texture. It can be a difficult task selecting the right floor match that will mesh with the interior of your home. You should spend plenty of time researching the types and colors with online vendors or by visiting a local home improvement or supply store.
After you have made a decision and purchased your flooring, you should stack it in the room you plan to install it in so it will get used to the room's humidity level. The moisture will cause the wood to expand. You should also leave a half inch gap around the edge when laying the floor so there is space allowed for expansion. You can always cover the gap with some type of molding.
DIY doesn't mean without direction so you should always follow the manufacturer's installation instructions. Failing to properly install the flooring will create a less than professional looking finished product. Today's flooring is micro-beveled in the factory so spacing isn't an issue for summertime expansion.
You may be considering new flooring due to wear and tear or scuffing on the existing flooring. If this is the case, you may want to consider refinishing the floors you have now, which will be an economical solution. Start by removing all contents in the room that touch the floor. By keeping windows and doors shut you will reduce excessive dust. You should allow 3-5 days for sanding and refinishing before moving furniture and other items back into the room.
Laminate flooring is an option if you're simply looking to upgrade the appearance of the floors in your house. The appearance looks like wood and requires minimal maintenance.Laminate also hides scratches and stains in high traffic areas caused by kids and animals. The interlocking tongue and groove system makes it easy to install.
Technology is widely used today in producing refinishing and flooring products. Do your homework and research all products on the market today.Flooring available today is much easier to use than in the past. Asking many questions and closely following following directions will produce a final product or finish you will be proud of and enjoy showing off to your famiy and guests.
