Telling if you have a broken water line

Not all broken water lines result in water leaking from the ceiling. Even if you can¡¯t find any visual signs that something is wrong, that doesn¡¯t mean there isn¡¯t a leaky pipe somewhere in your home. Jolly Plumbing owner Barry Jolly is a well-respected entrepreneur with more than 31 years of experience in the plumbing business. Using the expertise he developed, here, he gives us his advice on how to tell if you have a broken water line in your home.

If you've noticed a sudden increase in your water bill or puddles forming in your yard when it's not raining, you may have a leaking or broken water line. However, things don¡¯t always work out like that. There¡¯s often a chance that you might have a problem with your water line, but you don¡¯t even know it.

Sudden Increased Water Bill
Water lines can crack or deteriorate from a variety of unavoidable environmental conditions, and most people don't realize that maintenance of the water line, which runs from your house to the street, is the homeowner's responsibility. A lot of times, when people call and ask me how they can tell if there is a water line break somewhere in their home, that is because they have noticed a spike in their water bill. If you always have a fairly level water bill, and then all of a sudden the cost seems a lot higher, there may be a broken line inside or outside your home.

DIY Checking
If you suspect that there might be a leak in your line somewhere between the meter on the street and your house, there is an easy way to determine what is going on, which doesn¡¯t take much time or expertise. To check it for yourself, go down to the main water shutoff valve in your house ¡ª usually in the basement ¡ª and shut that valve completely off. Then, go out to the meter that¡¯s located on the street, open it, and look inside. If your meter is still moving, that means you have a leak somewhere between your house and the meter. And that leak is probably located in your water line underground.

Faulty Pipes
People usually want to know what will cause the leak in the first place. In fact, different factors can be at play. Most of the time, the leak problem has to do with a faulty pipe. Another issue can be the type of the pipe that is used in the house. The type of piping called Blue Max pipe was commonly used pretty much all the time about 10 or 15 years ago. Unfortunately, it turns out that it was a notoriously poor pipe. There was actually a big lawsuit over it, and a lot of people replaced their water lines with new piping for free at the time.

If you live in a home that was built in the 1990s, there is a good chance that your water service could be made from Blue Max pipe. And unless you were a part of that initial lawsuit, you probably still have those same pipes in place right now. If so, the pipe will leak eventually even if it hasn¡¯t started already. It is just a matter of time for it to start causing you problems, so I recommend people go ahead and work on getting it replaced as soon as they can.

Freezing Temperatures
If you don¡¯t have the Blue Max piping and your lines are fairly new, the temperature outside might be another reason. Freezing temperatures can cause problems for people¡¯s water lines, especially if the water line piping was not buried deep enough in the ground when it was initially installed. In addition, it is far more common for age to be the issue. For the most part, the reason why pipes have problems running from the water meter to the house just has to do with age, as old pipes or faulty pipes break over time.

A lot of tax credits are being offered for those who buy low-energy technology this year. As far as the tankless water heaters go, for example, there is currently a tax credit that can add up to $800 in savings for homeowners who purchase these appliances.

Septic Work
Here at Jolly Plumbing, we do a lot of septic work as well. It is important for people to maintain those systems so they don¡¯t hurt the environment with leakage or anything like that. When it comes to septic installation and septic tank pumping, homeowners need to get these things done regularly so that they don¡¯t have sewage coming out on the ground or discharging into the nearby creeks, rivers, or lakes.

If you want to be good to the environment, good septic tank maintenance is important. It is necessary to pump your septic tank about every four or five years, so don¡¯t try scrimping on that.

In short, I would say that more people are asking about what environmentally-friendly options are available when it comes to their plumbing systems. But they should be aware that these new low-energy products can be more expensive, so not everybody can necessarily afford this upgrade. For example, a typical tankless water heater installation for a home is around $2,500, compared to a regular one, which is about $800. So there is a big price difference. But for people who are ready to take the plunge, enough eco-friendly products are out there that they¡¯ll be able to find something they like and want to use in their house.

Repair Your Credit and Avoid Bankruptcy

The troubling economy of the past few years has damaged credit scores of people everywhere. Interest rates are low, and there are a plenty of great deals on houses and automobiles. To take advantage of the great deals out there, it is important to repair your credit. Before you can improve your scores, you need to know where you stand. Your credit score, or FICO score, is a number ranging from 300 to 850, and will determine what kind of interest rate you can get.

A good place to start on your path to credit improvement is to pay off your loans. Paying off your installment accounts can help your credit scores, but usually not as much as or paying off revolving accounts such as credit cards. Compiling large balances can hurt your scores, regardless of whether or not you pay your bills in full each month.

The credit bureaus typically calculate your scores based upon your previous balances.

Make a list of the items in dispute so you can submit them to the credit bureaus. Be sure to write an explanation as to why you dispute the negative information, list the account numbers, dates, and balances. Politely ask them to remove any incorrect information.

Is Bankruptcy the Best Option?

Should you determine that declaring bankruptcy is the best option for you, you will need to consult a bankruptcy lawyer. The attorney will advise you as to the best time to file, what type of bankruptcy you should file for, and whether or not you can maintain your assets. You will need help to determine whether chapter 7, or chapter 13 bankruptcy is the best option.

Filing a personal chapter 7 bankruptcy can be complicated. The BAPCPA bankruptcy act of 2005 has further limited the number of attorneys who handle bankruptcy filings. The sometimes onerous requirements outlined by the act have led many lawyers to focus on other fields.

If you are having a hard time finding an attorney, or simply can't afford it, you can always choose an online provider of full service chapter 7 or 13 filings. Or, you can seek the help of a paralegal. This approach can help you save money and eliminates the hassle of dealing with legalise an complicated software.

The bankruptcy forms are prepared by experts in the field, rather than by debtor themselves. It is important to keep in mind that hiring a paralegal to prepare the petition does not guarantee legal compliance, or that your filing will be successful. Trained paralegals personally prepare documents and submit them to the debtor. These customized documents can be more effective than the standard forms produced by software. The preparer should follow the guidelines set by the BAPCPA to ensure your protection.

Keep in mind that there is no law that says that Bankruptcy, or any other credit account information, must stay on your credit report for a pre-determined length of time. Credit Laws only define things that must come off after a certain number of years. Bankruptcies are removed from your credit report after 10 years, and other negative information disappears after 7 years. However, having a bankruptcy on your record can impede your ability to qualify for government grants, and other forms of federal funding.

Secured cards provide a perfect credit repair solution. The best of these cards provide virtually guaranteed approval, report to all three credit bureaus, and require only a small amount of money to get started.

If you have been burned by credit in the past, and are fearful about getting back into the credit world, you have to accept the fact that if you want usable credit for things that are not practical to pay cash for, like a house or auto, you need to rebuild. Opening two or three secured credit cards does not mean getting buried in debt. Once you take the step you will discover that moderate, careful use of debt can be empowering.

Manage Debt for Success

Managing your new credit cards for credit repair is easy, but the details matter. The credit scoring model will react most favorably if you make your payments right on time each month and keep your balances low. The key to optimizing your scores with new cards is to keep the ratio of your balance to your account limit under twenty percent.

A Simple Solution

Many people find it convenient to use their new cards to pay for small expenses that they would previously have paid in cash. This is a comfortable way to incorporate debt usage into your credit repair without causing any financial stress. Just use your new cards for the occasional tank of gas or bag of groceries. When you get the bill pay all but five or ten dollars, just to insure the account is always reported as active.

Lasco Soaking Tubs Can Complete Any Bathroom

Lasco was begun 1965. Items like Lasco soaking tubs are what the company is built on. Besides tubs, Lasco builds a wide range of bath related fixtures. Lasco has eight manufacturing facilities in the U.S. and their products represent 25% of the bath fixtures found in American homes. Their primary market is new home construction. They include showers, tubs with jets and whirlpools and steam showers in their product line. Their current catalog shows 58 different models of soaking tubs alone.

The smallest tub available is 54" long with the longest coming in at 72". There's frequently interest in small tubs for bathrooms with limited space. It's nice to see a company that takes the needs of larger, taller people into consideration also. Many of the tubs are available as either soaker or whirlpool tubs. All of the baths in the Lasco line are designed to be built into an alcove or surround. At this time they don't appear to offer any free standing or walk-in model tubs. What they lack in walk-in tubs they more than make up for in easy access showers and steam baths.

The majority of the soaker baths in the Lasco line are either rectangular or oval in shape. There are other shapes available including round, bowed, and corner baths, but these shapes are all in the series that incorporates jacuzzis or whirlpools. Because they're all molded from either acrylic or Lascoat (a fiberglass reinforced gelcoat) many of the tubs include slip resistant textured bottoms, built-in armrests, and ergonomic backrests. These are all small features but they can go a long way toward making the bathing experience more pleasant. While many of the tubs are a standard depth, 14"-17", some are as deep as 23.5" which makes for a deeper bath. All of the models in the Lasco line are designed to be reclined or partially reclined in. No built-in stools like you'll find in some types of Asian baths.

Lasco offers it tubs in in five different series. The materials that the tubs are made of and their appointments are what differentiate each series. Because of this there is a broad range of prices for the different models. The series range from the exclusive Radius Series which can include whirlpools and LEDs to the plainer Builders Choice series in either acrylic or Lascoat.
